A series of self-guided walks in the footsteps of angellightphoto
A circular walk that makes use of a forest path from Casola to Pugliano; quiet lanes and footpaths between Pugliano, Corubbio, Novella and Pieve San Lorenzo; and finishing with an ancient mule track back to Casola.
Walk highlights
A moderate walk on good paths, tracks, and lanes but with plenty of ups and downs — particularly in the early stage, which is pretty much steeply uphill all the way to Pugliano. About halfway to Pugliano, look out for the gravestone that is, apparently, where the remains of one of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany and the State of Lucca are interred.
There is a good bar in Pugliano, should you need refreshments, and also a small shop. The views across the fertile Tassanaro valley to the Apuan Alps is stunning.
The walk’s middle section is all downhill. The surfaced road is followed until you reach a shrine where you turn right onto a footpath that leads to Corubbio. From here, the lane is followed down towards Novella where, just above the hamlet, a footpath cuts out a huge zigzag in the road and leads directly to the settlement.
Just before the end of the hamlet, take a right turn down a narrow lane that leads to the signed footpath to Pieve San Lorenzo. Turn right onto the surfaced road and follow it out of the village. You are now on the old Casola to San Lorenzo road, which will take you through the olive groves back to Casola in Lunigiana.
